Lappset slides into sustainability with Circle Green
With over 55 years of expertise, Finland-based Lappset Group has established itself as a leader in the world of outdoor play and fitness equipment, consistently developing solutions that prioritize inclusivity, durability, and environmental sustainability. One key material at the core of its designs is stainless steel.
Stainless steel has proven to be a superior material for playgrounds for several reasons. Its clean and modern look adds a timeless style to any space. It’s also very hygienic, easy to clean, and resists rust, making it a durable and low-maintenance option.
But for Lappset, the use of stainless steel extends far beyond aesthetics and practicality. Driven by a commitment to sustainability, the company has embraced Outokumpu’s Circle Green stainless steel as part of its mission to create more environmentally friendly playgrounds.
From local beginnings to global reach
Lappset was founded in 1970 in Rovaniemi, Northern Finland, by Antero Ikäheimo. It began as a response to a gap in Finland’s playground equipment industry, a need Ikäheimo identified during his work in tourism development. Fast forward to 2023, and Lappset now exports to over 60 countries worldwide. The company takes pride not only in the quality and safety of its products, but also in its alignment with the sustainability values that have been a part of its DNA since the very beginning.
“Our main raw material, Nordic pine wood, has a negative carbon footprint,”
says Arto Lahtela, CEO of Lappset Group Oy.
“Most of our products boast a net-negative carbon footprint, and we want to make sure all future products stick to this principle. That is why Circle Green is a perfect fit for us.”
Partnering for sustainable growth
Lappset’s sustainability strategy is supported by its 20-year partnership with Outokumpu and Polar Metalli, the specialist manufacturer of sheet metal products. In 2024, Lappset adopted Outokumpu Circle Green, first used in a playground slide delivered to the Netherlands. “Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Lahtela.
“Circle Green integrates seamlessly into our manufacturing processes and promises strong long-term performance.”
Circle Green isn’t a new grade but a breakthrough in low-emission production of stainless steel, identical in properties to conventional steels. Its production cuts emissions by sourcing low-emission alloying elements, maximizing recycled content, and using 100% low-carbon electricity for processes like the electric arc furnace (EAF).
As a result, Circle Green stainless steel boasts the world’s lowest carbon footprint compared to the industry average, with some grades achieving up to 93% lower emissions, depending on alloying requirements*.
Addressing market demands for sustainability
At Lappset, sustainability isn’t just a value – it’s a necessity in today’s market. Public sector tenders, especially from cities and municipalities, increasingly require proof of sustainable practices.
“Many customers now choose sustainability over cheaper alternatives,” Lahtela explains. “Sustainability has become a prerequisite for tenders, especially in Europe, where strong regulations guide purchasing decisions.” While Europe leads this trend, growing awareness in regions like the US and the Middle East signals a rising global demand for greener solutions.
Closing the loop with recycling and lifespan
Lappset’s approach to sustainability involves a closed-loop philosophy. All its product materials – wood, plastic, rubber, and metal – are recyclable at the end of their lifespan. Clear recycling instructions and repair services on offer further extend product durability, reflecting the company’s commitment to resource efficiency.
“Our products are built to last decades,” says Lahtela.
“For example, stainless steel slides are virtually maintenance-free and designed to last the lifetime of the playground.”
Sustainability, innovation, and community
Lappset uses the proximity of its partners – Outokumpu and Polar Metalli – in Northern Finland to minimize logistics emissions. By blending cutting-edge design, sustainable materials, and regional collaboration, Lappset embodies how businesses can create a greener future.
Every playground built reflects their vision: sustainable, inclusive, and leaving behind a healthier planet – one slide at a time.
