How is Circle Green’s carbon footprint calculated?
We use our TÜV SÜD-verified and award-winning Product Carbon Footprint to calculate climate impact. The calculation considers all Green House Gas (GHG) emissions produced during the whole production chain (Scope 1,2,3), from cradle to gate.
Outokumpu is the first stainless steel producer worldwide to issue Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) certificates inline with ISO 14067. These certificates are based on a third-party verified methodology in accordance with ISO 14064-3, ensuring the highest level of transparency and credibility.
We even provide batch-specific CO2 figures for Outokumpu Circle Green. Green energy plays a significant role in the production of the low emission stainless steel, along with the use of special raw materials such as organic coke for ferrochrome production, and optimized scrap management.
This makes Circle Green the world’s first near-zero stainless steel. It has the lowest carbon footprint in the industry — a reduction of up to 93% when compared to the industry average.*) By choosing the most sustainable stainless in the world in your application, you can become a forerunner in your industry.
*) Outokumpu’s average product carbon footprint (2024): 1.6 kg CO₂e per kg of stainless steel based on lifecycle assessment. Global average carbon footprint of stainless steel (2024): 7 kg CO₂e per kg of stainless steel. Outokumpu Circle Green CO₂ emissions: down to 0.5 kilos of CO₂e per kg of stainless steel.
