Outokumpu to support Grundfos in decarbonizing the company’s global supply chain and water solutions with Circle Green

Outokumpu, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel, and Grundfos, a Danish company leading in advanced pump and water solutions, are kicking off a new collaboration on green steel. The vast majority of Grundfos’ standard material supplied by Outokumpu will be changed into Outokumpu Circle Green®, stainless steel with up to 93% lower carbon footprint compared to the global industry average*. Already this year, approximately 90% of the stainless steel used in Grundfos’ production – used for the company’s energy-efficient and water-saving pump solutions – will be Circle Green. The partnership supports Grundfos’ climate targets and contributes to Europe’s ambitious goal of becoming decarbonized by 2050.

“Remaining competitive and accelerating the green transition is fundamental to Europe’s future. Stainless steel is the most versatile industrial material and heavily needed for applications including clean energy and water solutions, playing a vital part for innovation and technological progress. Europe needs frontrunner companies throughout the value chain to drive the green transition forward. With our long-term customer Grundfos, we share the same ambition and commitment to Science-Based Targets and decarbonization goals, and we are happy to support their next step in sustainability by significantly reducing emissions from the company’s entire supply chain and solutions”, says Jörg Müller, Head of Sales for Stainless Europe at Outokumpu.

Global water scarcity demands advanced solutions and technologies

Climate change, population growth and urbanization are key contributors to global water scarcity. Grundfos develops advanced pump solutions and water technologies that improve water efficiency and reduce water waste. Energy-efficient pumps minimize water and energy consumption, and wastewater treatment technologies support water recycling and reuse. These solutions need low-emission materials, such as stainless steel, to support the green transition efforts.

“Grundfos actively seeks partners with the same commitment to sustainability and climate resiliency to make an even bigger impact in solving the world’s water and climate challenges. Ultimately, our long-term goal is to decarbonize our supply chain. Partnering with Outokumpu and switching to green steel is Grundfos’ first tangible effort in our supply chain decarbonization program. It will significantly contribute to lowering our own carbon footprint and helping our customers lower their footprint as well”, says Ulrik Gernow, COO and EVP at Grundfos.

Outokumpu Circle Green® was the first innovation of its kind on a global scale with such a low carbon footprint and with a product-specific footprint calculation for every delivery. Today, more than 40 leading companies from various industry sectors in Europe and Asia are using this solution to reduce their carbon footprint.

*) Global average carbon footprint of stainless steel (2024): 7 kg COe per kg of stainless steel (Outokumpu’s calculation based on data provided by CRU, worldstainless and Kobolde & Partners AB). Outokumpu Circle Green® CO emissions: down to 0.5 kilos of COe per kg of stainless steel.
