Outokumpu ranked among the top companies in the world on Corporate Knight’s list of Clean200
Outokumpu, the global leader in sustainable stainless steel, has been ranked 67th among the world’s companies, on Corporate Knight’s list of Clean 200 companies – reaching the highest place in the stainless steel industry and second among the Finnish companies. The ranking rates companies capturing the green transition in full flight, cataloguing the publicly traded companies that are leading clean economy solutions and earning the most from sustainable sources.
”We are proud to be recognized among the world’s top sustainability leaders. Our unwavering commitment to sustainability over the years has enabled us to produce stainless steel with 95% recycled material content —resulting in a durable, fully recyclable product. This significantly reduces our carbon footprint, cutting emissions by up to 75% compared to the industry average. By actively adopting and investing in more sustainable innovations and materials, companies can play a key role in helping their customers minimize their climate impact,” says Johann Steiner, Executive Vice President, Sustainability, People & Strategy at Outokumpu.
The Clean200 ranking was first calculated on July 1, 2016, and publicly released on August 15, 2016, by Corporate Knights and As You Sow. The data set is developed through assessment of a company’s revenue that aligns with the definitions laid out in the Corporate Knights Sustainable Economy Taxonomy, sourced from Corporate Knights research. To be eligible, a company must earn more than 10% of total revenues from clean sources.
“With the right financial data, the clean economy comes in clear – the numbers indicate that it is building momentum. In 2023, Outokumpu achieved EUR 6,961 million turnover – and a remarkable 90% of this is taxonomy-aligned, sustainable revenue. We're proud of our progress and remain committed to pursuing our ambitious science-based,1.5-degree-aligned, climate targets, and lead the industry in accelerating the green transition," Steiner continues.
In total, Clean200 companies earned more than $2.3 trillion in sustainable revenue in 2023, deriving on average 54.7% of their revenues from sustainable business activities.
